We are challenging our network to produce as little waste as possible during #OceansWeek (June 5th to 14th). The idea is straightforward, for the duration of #OceansWeek keep the trash you produce in a jar, excluding recyclables and compost, and at the end of the week, post a photo of your jar to Instagram with the hashtag #stoptrashingitchallenge.
Join artists Kate MacDonald, Lindsay Dobbin, Bria Miller and Mo Phung for a conversation about creativity in the oceans.
The artists will share lived experience as it connects to the oceans, as well as how artistic practice has been a way to sustain and deepen their relationship to water.
The event will also include offerings from the artists:
- A guided oceanic meditation by Kate MacDonald
- A sound recording of the Bay of Fundy by Lindsay Dobbin
- An opportunity to receive 1 of 2 ocean prints photographed by Mo Phung (as shown in the event photo)
- A live draw mural by Bria Miller of Brave Space

There’s Something In The Water is based off of Dr. Ingrid Waldron’s recently published book, and the experiences of impacted community members. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in October 2019. The book and film have both been catalysts, opening up the conversation around environmental racism in Nova Scotia and Canada.
The film will be viewed on a Netflix Watch Party from 5:00pm-6:15pm. The discussion and Q&A will start at 6:15pm on Zoom at the link provided to you.
The discussion and Q&A will be with a panel of women who are on the frontlines of environmental justice organizing in Nova Scotia and are highlighted in the film. The discussion and questions will be moderated by Let's Sprout.
If you have already seen the film, feel free to still tune into the panel to get a question answered or learn more! Folks who submit have a chance to win a prize from Oceans Week HFX at the Open Mic!
